Purity Is Not Just About Abstaining Sex…What Else Is It Then?

 

As Christians we have always been encouraged to walk in purity all the time. To many, purity is  saying no to sex before marriage. But there is a lot more to it than that. Below are three truths about purity that every Christian should take to heart:

  1. Purity is from Jesus.

Left on our own, our lives will always be stained with sin. Purity is not in our earthly nature that is why Jesus had to bridge the gap for us by cleansing us and giving us a new identity. The old has gone and the new has come. When we accepted Jesus as our personal Lord and savior, our hearts regenerated and we were made into a new creation! Jesus deposited his holiness and purity into our new identities. (see 2 Corinthians 5:17)

  1. Purity is not just abstaining from sex; it is a heart issue.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:8 (NLT), “God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.”

While it is true that not having sexual relations outside the boundaries of marriage is good and should always be considered and embraced, we shall also put into mind that such is not just the core of purity.

Purity should be rooted to the very heart of our being. Sadly, there are situations where Christians are abstaining from sex yet they are still hiding in porn addiction or are still enslaved with lust. In this case, do not be afraid to ask someone you trust to pray for you and ask God to help you set free from this addiction and turn your hearts to him. God is faithful to help and forgive.

  1. Purity is our new standard and our new calling

The bible says in in Philippians 4:8-9 (NIV), “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

We are urged to think about such things because this is what God designed us to be. We are called to be pure simply because it leads us to God.

Notice how we have placed “purity is from Jesus” at the very  top of this list? It’s  because we want to emphasize that despite our best efforts  we will never be pure without Him. And above all, He is the one who paid the price so we can be all led to God!
