I remember, many years ago, walking down the road and praying in frustration, “God, it isn’t fair! You are asking me to do things that I cannot do!” I did not yet understand the ways of God. He always asks us to do things that, in ourselves, we cannot do. He chooses the “unlikely to do great things.” At the birth of Jesus, we see this in a powerful way.
Jesus came out of a despised land! The people of Galilee were considered socially and morally inferior, yet Jesus identified with them. When Philip found Jesus, he said, “We have found the one that Moses wrote about in the law and about whom the prophets also wrote – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. Nazareth! Can anything good come from there, Nathaniel asked?” (John 1:45, 46)
Jesus was born in a manger! He was not born in a kingly palace, but a place where animals lived.
Jesus was visited by the lowly shepherds! Jesus first visitors were not religious or political leaders. His first visitors were a group of people that were on the same social level as tax collectors. Shepherds were marginalized by society of that day, yet God chose to announce to them His Son’s birth. Angel armies appeared to those that society wanted nothing to do with. The glory of God was revealed to those who had no earthly glory.
God chose a seemingly insignificant young woman to give birth to His Son. Mary was not famous or well-known. In fact, her own testimony was that God had “regarded the low-estate of His handmaiden.” (Luke 1:48) She must have experienced much rejection because of her pregnancy, but God did not reject her.
God chooses the humble and honors them! He chooses those rejected by man and lifts them up! He chooses the unlikely, the insignificant and does wonders through them!
How about you? Do you feel insignificant and lacking? Congratulations! You are God’s choice! Just as Mary was chosen to carry Jesus to this world, you are chosen to carry Him to the world! He is in you!
Mary felt great joy and amazement that God had honored her in this way! She gladly proclaimed, “For the Mighty One has done great things for me; and holy is His name.” (Luke 1:49) Do we feel that same awe of a God who has chosen US to carry the Holy Spirit to the world? Are we rejoicing in His favor?
The source of our power is the same as Mary experienced. “And the angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit shall come on you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you.” (Luke 1:35)
Along with me, cry out for the power of the Highest to overshadow you! The Holy Spirit is IN you! Oh, what a high calling we have! Learn to rest in HIS power. He delights in you, His chosen! Remember, that nothing shall be impossible with God! NOTHING!
See the smile of God on you right now. Hear Him call YOUR name. Have a blessed Christmas season as you rejoice in His love!
